Join our Team

Training has always been central to our research program. Graduate students in the Knights Group receive training related to optical design, manufacture and characterization and the fabrication and test of semiconductors. We have a collaborative working environment between group members and with academic and industrial partners. It is our opinion that this prepares students for positions at a higher level in academia or within industrial research. Collaboration has allowed our students to spend internships in industry including Intel and HP labs in Silicon Valley, at Ranovus in Ottawa and at Applied Materials in Gloucester MA. Prof. Knights is a strong advocate for industrial placement during a graduate degree. We have recently sought to add to the list of companies able to host students and we have secured commitments from Ratheon Elcan, and IntlVac, both in Ontario, who will host interns from the Knights group in 2017.

We encourage all personnel to participate in conferences, and require that their work is submitted at least once per year to either conference or peer-reviewed journals (or both). Former members of the group have found significant success in work related to integrated optics. This includes the silicon photonics group at Ranovus (five of the team members graduated from the Knights group); the world renowned Intel Silicon Photonics group; the Toronto University Health Network; AECL, Siemans, L3Wescam and others. A former group member, Dr Jonathan Bradley, is now a Professor at McMaster University, collaborating with our group in the area of amplification in silicon photonics.

A graduate degree from the Knights group has been proven to prepare engineers for the most challenging industrial and academic positions.

Opportunities

At this time we have filled our vacant positions for entrance in 2017. If you are interested in graduate work beginning in May or September 2018 we invite you to contact us.
Post-Doctoral Fellow
  • None available at this time, but please check back again at a later date.
Ph.D. Students
  • Optical modulation for extended reach
  • Ion beam synthesis of new materials
  • Optical detection at extended wavelengths
  • Strain engineering in silicon
MASc Students
  • Characterization of semiconductor defects using positron annihilation, TEM and ellipsometry
  • Engineering optical waveguides at using sub-wavelength gratings
Undergraduate Student Research Assistants and 3H04 and 4H04 project students
We hire between 2 and 4 undergraduate summer students to work alongside the graduate students in our group. At this time we have completed our hiring for 2017, but welcome interest for summer 2018. We are also interested in hearing from McMaster Engineeering Physics students looking to carry out project work as part of the 3H04 and 4H04 courses.  Contact Professor Knights if you are an undergraduate looking for such a position.

Submit your Resume online

Please submit your resume and cover letter for any of the posts listed above. Professor Knights will review your information and contact selected candidates for interviews and/or further information.
